Banditry: A joint security team rescues 15 kidnapped people and recovers two motorcycles in Niger

The joint police and vigilante tactical team rescued at least fifteen people abducted by armed bandits in the village of Jellako, Rafi Local Government Area in Niger State.

State Police Command, which disclosed through Public Relations Officer, PRO, DSP Wasiu Abiodun in Minna, said the Joint Security Team engaged the bandits in the area, which had led to the release of the 15 people in captivity.

He explained that due to the firepower of the tactical teams, the bandits fled the scene and some of them fled into the forest with gunshot wounds even as two motorbikes were recovered.

According to him, “there is an ongoing clearance operation as part of efforts to reduce or eradicate banditry and other forms of crime in the state, on 05/09/2022 at approximately 8:30 p.m. of a denunciation according to which presumed armed bandits were seen in the vicinity. Village of Jellako, local government of Rafi, the joint security tactical teams with self-defense members were immediately mobilized to the area where the bandits were engaged in a firefight”.

“As the thugs fled, they abandoned two of their motorcycles and fifteen victims were abducted from different locations across the state.”

The State Police image maker revealed that the victims were rescued unharmed by the teams and taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

“The victims will then be reunited with their families after medical treatment,” he said.

The Police PRO further reassured members of the public that the police and other state security agencies will not let up on the ongoing assault on banditry and other forms of crime until a peaceful and more secure environment will not be achieved in bandit-infested areas.
