National Security Agency: Bulgaria is an object of systematic interest for intelligence – Novinite.com

Bulgaria continues to be subject to systematic checks intelligence interest. This is according to a report by the State Agency for National Security (WITHOUT) for the past year, reported the BNR.

WITHOUT points out that the activities of a group of Bulgarians who spied for Russia, as well as Russian citizens linked to Russian special services, have been stopped.

In order to counter the possibility of terrorists infiltrating our country, the National Security Agency carries out round-the-clock inspections of border authorities’ signals to match them with profiles created in the system developed for the identification of combatants foreigners on the move. In 2021, 6,208 such inspections were carried out, due to the fact that people in this risk category are not allowed to cross our territory“, specifies the published report.

As a member of the EU and NATO, our country remains the object of intelligence interest. In 2021, it mainly targets: the policy and commitments of our country as a member of NATO and the EU; specifics of individual bilateral relations; the ongoing processes in the “Security” sector, including the rearmament and modernization of the Bulgarian army; processes and topics in the domestic political sphere, especially in the context of multiple elections in 2021; processes in the economic and social field; processes and feelings in individual communities Bulgaria; the current state of Bulgarian communities abroad, etc..,” the WITHOUT reports the report.

In accordance with the national priorities of their own governments, foreign special services continue to engage in export actions to Bulgaria internal issues specific to the respective country“, according to the report published on the page of the Council of Ministers.

As more significant results in the fight against risks and threats related to the activity of foreign special services in 2021, the following can be indicated:

– to intercept the activities of a group of Bulgarian citizens who have deliberately and consciously placed themselves at the service of the Russian Federation in order to serve it, as spies. Five people have been arrested in this case. Charges have been brought by the District Attorney’s Office of Bulgaria in pre-trial proceedings under s. 109 in connection with art. 104, para. 1 of the Criminal Code (PC). In connection with this affair, two Russian diplomats were declared persona non grata by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria;

– to intercept the activities of Russian citizens involved in the activities of Russian special services on the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria. In this case, the Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria initiated pre-trial proceedings under s. 108a of the Penal Code (“terrorism”), under which a Russian diplomat was declared persona non grata by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bulgaria;

– to intercept the activity of a Bulgarian citizen who entered the service of a foreign special service. The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Republic of Bulgaria initiated pre-trial proceedings under s. 105, para. 1 of the Criminal Code (“espionage”);

– inclusion in the table of aliens not wanted in the territory of the Republic of Bulgaria (Art. 21a para. 1 Aliens Act in the Republic of Bulgaria in connection with art. 1, para. 1, point 1) of 1 foreign citizen with a ban on entry to our country for a period of 10 years due to an activity creating a threat to national security.

The report also mentions a threefold increase in migratory pressure towards Bulgaria compared to a year earlier.
